Alaqua Pet of the Week
A-tisket, a-tasket, an Emu-egg in my basket?
For those of who thought an emu was something only imagined by Dr. Seuss, let there be enlightenment! A horse is a horse, of course, of course, but an emu is a horse of an entirely different color. Take the following emu IQ test and find out where you rank!
TRUE or FALSE: An emu is an animal that is -
From Australia.
Currently farmed for meat, feathers, hide and oil in the U.S.
Not a good pet!
Bigger than a breadbox (MUCH bigger…)
Currently finding a forever home at Alaqua Animal Refuge.
Helping to rescue other animals by donating their eggs.
Making an artistic SPLASH on E-Bay!
All answers are TRUE!
Following on the heels of a successful and innovative fundraiser marrying art to the love of animals, (Transformations), local artist/gallery owner Teresa Cline has again partnered with Alaqua Animal Refuge to make lemons out of lemonade, or in this case, money out of emu eggs.
Together with Executive Director Laurie Hood, Cline is acting as a catalyst to bring the creative genius and generosity of artists to bear on the philanthropic needs of a local nonprofit serving the community.
Two female emus, rescued in Walton County, are now happily nesting at their forever home – Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, Fl. The girlfriends are laying lots of huge, beautiful dark-green eggs. Prized by craftsmen, such (unfertilized) emu eggs are often sold to gourmet foods operations or other commercial outlets. Alaqua, presently handling over 2,000 animal rescue or surrender requests per month, and in dire need of operating funds, has another idea.
Over twenty artists have volunteered to paint original scenes or use the eggs to create fantastic sculptures. For a limited 3-day run (April 2-3-4), their creations will be available to E-Bay Auction bidders just in time for filling some memorable Easter baskets.
