Successful pet adoption, like the development of any serious relationship, begins with an introduction, evolves through a series of bonding steps and discovery experiences, and culminates with love and commitment. Pet adoption starts in the minds and hearts of prospective owners who must think seriously before they adopt pets, examining their lives to make sure they are ready for such long-term relationships.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

Visit the Alaqua Animal Refuge (perhaps several times).

Take your time and browse through our many kennels and cat cages. Visit our Equine Center and get to know our horses.

Ask our knowledgeable staff your questions and discuss your concerns.

With the assistance of an Alaqua volunteer or staff member, spend time with the possible pet in one of our exercise areas or cat viewing area.

Plan on spending at least 30 minutes socializing with the animal.

Begin the adoption process paperwork.

Complete the adoption paper work.

References are contacted.

The application is approved/denied.

Adoption Contract is completed and adoption fees are paid.

Your pet is taken to its new home.

Dog/Puppy $150.00

Cat $100.00

Kitten $125.00

Horse Depends upon the animal. Please contact us for specific information.

INCLUDED IN THE ADOPTION FEE:

Dogs over 6 months old: heartworm preventative, flea preventative, vaccinations, preventive worming

Puppies under 6 months old: vaccinations, preventive worming, spay/neuter if age appropriate or includes certificate

Cats over 6 months old: Felv/Fiv snap test, vaccinations, span/neuter if intact

Kittens under 6 months: Felv/Fiv snap teset, vaccinations, spay/neuter if age appropriate or includes certificate
